Position Overview: The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultural Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma invites applications for a full-time Lecturer of French for AY21-22, beginning in August 2021. Lecturers teach language courses and perform instruction-related duties in accordance with the mission, policies, and procedures of the department.
The French Lecturer provides a quality learning experience for students. Lecturers perform instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the college. The relationship of the Lecturer faculty member to the student is one of teacher and facilitator of learning. Teaching and departmental service are expected.
College/Department Overview:The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies promotes the study and teaching of second languages and the study of the literatures and cultures produced by the peoples of those languages. In addition to major programs in French, German, and Spanish, the department offers courses in Arabic, Greek, Chinese, Italian, Korean, and more. The College of Liberal Arts currently has 113 full-time and 152 part-time faculty in 8 academic departments. The College serves the University’s Core Curriculum programs and enrolls more than 2,850 undergraduate students and more than 300 graduate students in 34 undergraduate and 17 graduate majors.For further information, see our websites at and .
Department Specific Essential Job Functions:The French Lecturer teaches a 4-course load (16 credit hours) of undergraduate courses in French each semester at the 1000 (Elementary) and 2000 (Intermediate) levels. Requirements also include: attending start of year training sessions, participating in departmental faculty meetings, and coordinating with departmental faculty to achieve course continuity, assessment, and quality as required. Some service is also expected.
Qualifications/Experience Required:An earned Master’s degree awarded by a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in the field specified in the position announcement (exceptions require Academic Affairs approval). The successful candidate possesses excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills. Experience Preferred:Master’s degree in French or related field and at least 3 years higher education teaching experience in French are required. Online teaching experience is preferred. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Mastery of classroom multimedia, demonstrated methodological training, and ability to foster successful production of communicative language. Language instructors often teach the Core Curriculum courses, which require opening the students’ minds to a global perspective on language and culture. Daytime and evening availability is necessary. Lecturers should expect to teach day and evening classes every semester.
